Physician Relocation to Edmonton: A Guide for Doctors Moving to Alberta

Physicians relocating to Edmonton represent a significant portion of my client base. The combination of Alberta Health Services recruitment, locum-to-permanent transitions, and the province's ongoing need for physicians in both urban and rural settings brings doctors to Edmonton from across Canada and internationally.

This guide is for physicians who are in the process of relocating — or seriously considering it — and want to understand what the move looks like on the ground.

Why Physicians Choose Edmonton

Alberta's healthcare system has been actively recruiting physicians for years, and Edmonton specifically offers a combination of factors that attract doctors:

Compensation. Alberta physician compensation is among the highest in Canada. The Alberta Medical Association's Physician Master Agreement sets fee schedules that are competitive nationally.

No provincial income tax on the first $21,003, and Alberta's flat provincial tax rate is significantly lower than Ontario's or BC's top marginal rates. For a physician earning $400,000+, the annual tax savings compared to Ontario can be $30,000–$50,000.

No PST. Alberta is the only province without a provincial sales tax. On a physician's spending level, this is a meaningful annual saving.

Housing affordability. A physician's income in Edmonton buys a dramatically different lifestyle than the same income in Toronto or Vancouver. A $1.5M budget in Edmonton gets you an exceptional home in one of the city's best neighbourhoods. In Toronto, it gets you a detached home in a mid-range neighbourhood.

Quality of life. Edmonton has excellent schools, a strong arts and culture scene, and the river valley park system. It's a genuinely livable city.

Alberta Health Services: What to Know

AHS is one of the largest employers of physicians in Canada. The organization operates hospitals, community health centres, and specialty programs across the province.

Major Edmonton hospitals:

  • University of Alberta Hospital (academic, tertiary care)
  • Royal Alexandra Hospital (trauma, women's health, neurosciences)
  • Misericordia Community Hospital (community, surgical)
  • Grey Nuns Community Hospital (community, surgical)
  • Stollery Children's Hospital (pediatric, within U of A Hospital)
  • Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital

Academic medicine: The University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada's top medical schools. Physicians interested in academic appointments, research, or teaching will find significant opportunities here.

AHS Physician Recruitment: AHS has a dedicated physician recruitment team that can assist with credential recognition, practice setup, and relocation support. If you're being recruited by AHS, your recruiter should be your first point of contact for the administrative side of the move.

Credential Recognition

If you're coming from another Canadian province, credential recognition is generally straightforward. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) handles licensure.

Canadian-trained physicians: The process is typically 4–8 weeks for full licensure if you hold a valid licence in another Canadian province. Apply early — don't wait until you've accepted a position.

International medical graduates (IMGs): The process is more complex and varies by country of training. The CPSA website has detailed information on IMG pathways. AHS physician recruitment can also provide guidance.

Specialists: If you're a specialist, confirm that your subspecialty credentials are recognized in Alberta before you commit to a position.

Neighbourhoods Near Major Hospitals

Where you live relative to your hospital matters, especially for physicians with on-call responsibilities.

Near University of Alberta Hospital / Stollery:

  • Glenora — 10–15 minutes, excellent character homes, mature neighbourhood
  • Westmount — 10–15 minutes, similar character to Glenora
  • Riverbend — 20–25 minutes, excellent schools, river valley access
  • Terwillegar — 25–30 minutes, newer homes, strong schools

Near Royal Alexandra Hospital (north side):

  • Glenora / Westmount — 10–15 minutes
  • Laurier Heights — 10–15 minutes
  • St. Albert — 20–25 minutes (popular with physicians for school quality)

Near Grey Nuns / Misericordia (south/west):

  • Windermere — 15–20 minutes to Misericordia
  • Terwillegar — 20–25 minutes
  • Riverbend — 15–20 minutes

What Physicians Typically Buy in Edmonton

Based on my experience with physician clients, a few patterns emerge.

Budget range: Most physician households are looking in the $700,000–$1.5M range, with some going higher for exceptional properties.

Housing type: Detached homes are the strong preference — physicians coming from Toronto or Vancouver are often buying a detached home for the first time and want the space and yard that comes with it.

Neighbourhood priorities: Schools (for families with children), proximity to hospital, and neighbourhood character are the most common priorities. Many physician families also value proximity to the river valley for outdoor recreation.

Timeline: Physician relocations often have hard start dates — a residency start, a practice agreement commencement, or an AHS contract start. This creates pressure to find and close on a home quickly. I'm experienced with compressed timelines and can work within them.

The Financial Picture

For a physician household earning $400,000 in Alberta vs. Ontario:

  • Provincial income tax savings: Approximately $25,000–$40,000/year
  • No PST: Approximately $8,000–$12,000/year in savings on spending
  • No health care premiums: $1,800/year saved
  • Housing: Potentially $500,000–$1,000,000 less in purchase price for comparable quality

The financial case for Alberta is compelling for most physicians. The lifestyle case depends on personal priorities, but Edmonton consistently delivers for families who come with open minds.

Working With a Relocation Specialist

Physician relocations have specific characteristics: hard start dates, compressed timelines, high-value purchases, and often a spouse or partner who is also navigating a career transition.

I've helped enough physicians make this move to understand what you need. If you're relocating to Edmonton as a physician and want to start the conversation, reach out. The earlier we connect, the better positioned you'll be when your start date arrives.
